The National Indigenous Coalition on Hydropower (NICH) is an Indigenous-led collaboration to transform hydropower policy and practice to protect and strengthen water resilience and uphold Tribal sovereignty across Indigenous lands.
NICH supports Tribes, Indigenous-led organizations, and Indigenous advocates in navigating hydropower policy issues and project proposals. We provide a forum for sharing knowledge, building relationships, and coordinating action on issues that affect Tribal Nations, rivers, and communities. Whether you are seeking technical information, policy support, opportunities to connect with other Tribes, or a platform to elevate Indigenous priorities, NICH serves as a resource and partner in advancing Indigenous leadership in hydropower decision-making.
The Problem: Hydropower Impacts Indigenous Lands, Waters, and Lifeways
Thousands of hydropower projects, many built without Tribal consent, are harming Indigenous lands, waters, and cultural practices. Projects block fish, destroy sacred sites, degrade water supplies, and harm culturally important plants, animals, and foods. Opportunities to improve damaging operations arise infrequently, but nearly 400 dam licenses are up for renewal in the next decade creating a once-in-a-generation opportunity for meaningful action.
Additionally, the push for clean energy has caused a new wave of hydropower project proposals on Indigenous lands and sacred sites, often without consulting or working with impacted Indigenous people.
We are repeating the mistakes that result in long-term damage to Indigenous lands, waters, and lifeways.

By ensuring Indigenous people are at the table and equipped to lead, we can benefit all communities by reshaping how rivers are managed, restoring ecological function, improving climate resilience, and rebalancing water use in ways that are more just and equitable.
